The Signal Issue 1

COMPLETED FOR SISTER MARY | Client: Sister Mary for The Signal | New York + Washington DC

Completed for Sister Mary I designed the first issue The Long Game, a limited-edition print publication for The Signal, a global current affairs brand based in Washington. Created with the Human Rights Foundation, this debut issue reimagines the Soviet-era samizdat—an underground self-publishing publication—as a bold, contemporary statement on the global struggle between authoritarianism and democracy. Working with SISTER MARY and inspired by Soviet-era design, we used bold, condensed, underlined Manuka headlines as striking visual anchors for each discussion. We highlighted pull quotes to punctuate the layout, ensuring rhythm and readability. To evoke a historical feel, we chose unbleached paper, contrasted with a bold red-and-gold palette—blending rebellion with refinement. The grid was deliberately disrupted, layering colored blocks, images, and cropped headlines to create urgency and movement. This raw, unfiltered aesthetic invites readers to engage deeply, mirroring The Signal’s mission to navigate complexity in a rapidly shifting world.
